PANSY APPLIQUÉ & QUILTED QUILT

Item No. 660
As Advertised in 101 Patchwork Patterns and Designs Worth Doing [ circa 1930 ]

“This is an appliqué pattern using that gentle flower favorite, the pansy, conventionalized somewhat to form a center border which is really just twelve blocks, each 12 inches square. This is surely reducing the number of blocks in a quilt to a minimum, yet their close position on the quilt gives the effect of generous, even prodigal profusion.

“The quilting patterns suggested for making up this beautiful quilt include the center Feather Circle, 18 inches across, the Cable, Ostrich Plume, Feather Band and Pineapple
[2].

“The Butterfly Quilt here is an entirely new quilt that you will want—it’s so dainty, different and altogether stunning. Twenty-one butterflies in prints and plain colors of yellow, pink and blue are all in one delightful, rainbow-hued scheme. Or, you may use scraps of your own prints for top wings and plain cloth for lower wings; all different would surely make a quite permissible plan for butterflies.

“The butterflies are so simplified as to be quite easy to piece. Antennae or feelers are a black chain stitch and an outlining of black is suggested in the instruction sheet which accompanies each order.”

Ruby Short McKim [circa 1927]

The Butterfly Quilt was offered in the original McKim Studios' Designs Worth Doing Catalogs and 101 Patchwork Patterns – long before the invention of rotary cutting tools. McKim Studios Revival has reproduced this pattern with new instructions for today’s quilter.

The original blocks finished 12" square. Cutting charts for 3 block sizes along with construction and finishing instructions are provided for Queen, Crib and Wall/Table Topper options. The 21st century version would be fabulous in batiks, 30s prints or other fabrics of your choice.

“The Tulip is simple to do and is sunny and attractive in different shades of orange with accompanying green leaves. It sets together like a diamond-paned window with white blocks and colored squares.” The 21st century version would be fabulous in batiks, 30s prints or other fabrics of your choice.

“One woman said, “Before I catch the quilt fever, I’ll have to see a pattern that’s entirely different and stunningly beautiful!” The Oriental Poppy is in answer, and beside filling those requirements it is really quite simple to make. The pieced poppy is all straight sewing, the sort that may be run up on the sewing machine, while the bottom half of the block has two leaves and a stem that whips down by hand.”

The Oriental Poppy Quilt patterns were offered circa 1927 in Adventures in Needlecraft, Designs Worth Doing and 101 Patchwork Patterns – long before the invention of rotary cutting tools. McKim Studios has reproduced this pattern with new instructions for today’s quilter.

“The original was gorgeous in two values of red, a flame and a scarlet, with the flower center of black, boilproof of course, and green appliqué.” The 21st century version would be fabulous in batiks, 30s prints or other fabrics of your choice.

"“The quilts are sateen with appliqué patches of the same material. If desired they can be lined and interlined with a single thickness of cotton wadding. The pillows are also sateen, 18x21 inches.

“Another attractive way to make the quilts and pillows, and much less expensive, is to use pink chambray for the girl and blue for the boy and outline the figures with perle cotton, instead of the appliqués.”

“If you wish these chubby babies stamped on material all ready to make we can supply them stamped on a beautiful quality finest cream muslin. Each block finishes 9 inches square stamped for appliqué placing and the three oblique lines to each corner as shown, which continue onto the alternate plain blocks by connecting with a ruler line after the blocks have been set together. Alternate blocks do not come stamped for quilting. All appliqué materials are included with each block in a yellow print, plain blue, flesh, and light tan, fast colors of course.

“The crib quilt as sketched has 4 boys and 4 girls, making the center 27 by 40 inches, to which a print border is added.”

“Who doesn’t cherish the memory of the happy hours spent at the circus, with its pomp and splendor, its trained animals and trick clowns? And what child wouldn’t be proud to have this circus quilt for his or her very own—especially when it would be such fun helping mother make it in a few hours’ time."

“Cloth panels hang from a rod in top casing or through loops, and keep their shape better when lined. Use fringe or braid across the bottom

“A pieced border of checker-board squares would be smart to finish the Mother Goose panel into a coverlet.”

WHAT A TREASURE!
This printed pattern is from an original pencil sketch, smudges and all, with perforations.

“There is no mistaking the Oakleaf and Acorn appliqué pattern. It describes itself. In old quilts the Oakleaf and Acorn were always made of dark red and green, appliquéd of course, to white material.”
